Volleyball

We all got to play a little volleyball this fall.  The kids and Josh A. made up a homeschooling volleyball team. They flew with Paul to play in Newhalen, Port Alsworth and they played the team here in Nondalton.  They won all three matches and had a great time

We also played a couple of scrimmages here in Nondalton.  The parents and teachers played against the kids.  Vince & Marylil Spady, good friends from Soldotna came to visit us one day.  They happened to come on a scrimmage day and played with us.  Vince is in the picture below.  Vince is a bit older than me and I would like to say that I hope I'm playing as quick and sharp as he is when I'm his age but I can't say that.  Because, even though he's a bit older than me he's already way quicker and sharper.  He's good!

Family Week Kentucky

So, way back in the beginning of April, Dad, myself, Deborah and Quentin went to Family Week Kentucky.  Family Wk is put on by the same group we went to Israel with.  So a lot of the people that were there we had met in Israel last fall, which was awesome.
A couple days before it started we flew to my Grandparents in North Carolina and visited them and my cousins for a couple days.
One day, while I was shopping with Grandma, Dad, Grandpa, Deborah and Quentin  put the boat out in the pond to try drain it so they could fix a leak.  The drain didn't work or something but they had fun.
I don't think this is how you put a boat in the water...
We borrowed Grandma and Grandpa's fifth-wheel and truck to drive up to Kentucky so Quentin put some kind of sealant on it before we left.  (p.s. why does blogger make all the pictures so blurry??? aghh)
One of  the main reasons we flew all the way the Kentucky was for Devin and Barrett's wedding.  They had their Betrothal in Israel while we were there.  It was beautiful wedding.  Unfortunately we didn't get many good pictures of it.  In fact that was pretty much the theme of the whole week.  If you're having  fun who wants to stop and take pictures?  Mom wasn't very happy with that though:)
They tried to make their wedding as much of a mirror of Yeshua coming back to get his bride as possible. All anyone knew was that Barrett was going to come for Devin on Sunday.  No one but his father knew what time on Sunday just like in Matthew 24:36 where Yeshua says "But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, but my Father only".  So we all just hung out at the campground all day waiting for the shofar to sound then we had an hour to get ready for the wedding ("and He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet (shofar), and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, and from one end of heaven to the other" Matthew 24:31).
The guys riding through camp blowing the shofars and yelling "the bridegroom is coming".
Everyone waiting for Barrett.
The groom and his bride.
After we all gathered at the campground and Barrett came we walked up to the amphitheater.  There was a lot of people there and it was a fairly long walk so we quite a few cars piled up behind us.

It was a great way to start off the week:)  The rest of the week was awesome.  I got nice and sunburned but had a great time hanging out with old friends from Israel and new friends that we just met.
Volleyball and four-square games were constant.
The Friday we were there was Passover so we had a wonderful Pesach meal with the Hilton's and Wahlberg's.  Keeping up with our theme, these are the only pictures we have.  Oh well, you can just take my word for it, it was great.

After family week we drove back down to grandma and grandpa's and spent another day with them.  Then we flew back up to Alaska.  Right now I'm really missing the heat that was down south.  It is freezing up here in AK.  It was snowing a couple days ago.  It's not supposed to snow in May!  I think I say that every year though and it always snows:)

Paul & Anna turn a year older

My beautiful sweet Anna turned 12. She still loves climbing trees and she can still wash dishes with her feet on the counter or in the sink. She is maturing though, just tonight she asked if she could re-upholster the lazy boy chair. We girls did one already, but I haven't gotten going on it's twin yet. I told her to go for it and she took it apart. Hopefully she stays motivated for the project tomorrow:-)

Two days later was Paul's birthday. We were in the midst of a community three man volleyball tournament.

Paul, Quentin and Josh A. made up one team.
Abigail, Deborah and I along with Regina, made up another team. We both won one game and lost one game, so of course the tournament bracket pit us against each other. One of us would be eliminated! The girls had a simple strategy, keep the ball away from Paul. My handsome husband is a good volleyball player, and while the boys will be great one day, they just don't have as much experience as the rest of us. Our strategy worked well and we beat the guys. But they were great sports about it. That is one reason I love sports, under proper supervision you can really develop your character for the good while playing sports. Nothing shows your good and bad character traits faster than a good competitive game. We have taught our children how to play and have fun and be good sports and it was a joy watching them play in the tournament.
Last year Paul used a blow torch to light his candles (you can see that post here). This year instead of putting all ? candles on his cake, I used the candles to write his age. Can you make it out below?

Paul, "Where's my blow torch?"

Happy Birthday Paul. May God bless you this year as you lead our family!

Homeschool Volleyball

The school here in Nondalton didn't have high school age kids that wanted to play volleyball. It turned out to be a good thing for us as a family because we decided to make our own team. We reserved a time at the gym and the whole family plus a few other kids get together and play. Sometimes either Paul or I don't make it, but one or both of us usually can and we have a great time.
Sarah is so cute doing her stretching exercises. You can see her below next to me as she tries to imitate everything we do.
The little boys and Sarah amuse themselves with all the cool gym equipment they can find while Paul or I are teaching the older kids the basics of volleyball.

For our older kids, one of the funnest things about playing volleyball with the school was getting to fly to the two tournaments they had for the district teams. They enjoyed spending time with their friends from other villages. So, Paul took Abigail, Deborah and Quentin (they play 3 man volleyball here) to Port Alsworth for a scrimmage game. Then Paul flew them to Kokanok to watch the district tournament. The lake froze over thick enough for Paul to land on the lake to load the kids up for the flight.

Volleyball

Abigail, 9th grade, and Deborah, 7th grade, just finished their first volleyball season.  A few years ago most of the district had six man mixed (boys & girls) volleyball teams. With so many people from the Bush heading to Anchorage, the villages are getting smaller and now most of the teams in the district are three man mixed teams.  It works out great for us as homeschoolers.  Since the three man teams are not state sanctioned we can play with the highschool team.  It worked out well for the school too since they needed a girl :) Deborah was the Jr High team.  Since they have to fly to all their away games, the district wouldn't pay for the Jr. Highers to travel but they got to play at the home games.
Their first game was at Port Alsworth.  It is the closest village to Nondalton up the lake and we lived there for six months before we moved to Nondalton.  Since we've still got so many good friends who live there, Paul flew up with the older kids for the games.  They got to stay with the Fowlers and their eight kids.  Great fun!  Since Deborah was there anyway they played a Jr. High game.
Here's the team at Port Alsworth:  left to right - Nicole Rogenes - coach, Marvin Balluta, Richard Weedman, Deborah Brendemuhl, Beretta Trefon, and Abigail Brendemuhl.

We had one home match this year.  Kokonok and Levelock came and played Friday night and Saturday morning.  The whole district got together at Newhalen and had a volleyball clinic/leadership conference.  Their only other match was the district tournament at Chignik Lake halfway down the Aleutian Chain.  Paul managed to be the pilot or extra chaperone and go with Abigail to all the games.
